lesson 14: Manipulating The Bed: Part 2
Intro
The idea behind this tutorial is to take this product image of a window wall frame, remove its background and rebuild it to be used in a design board. You will learn how to break up a piece of furniture into segments that can be moved around. We use very similar steps in Lesson 10 where we talked a little bit about 3D theory. I recommend you start with lesson 10.
Getting Started
To get started I will separate the bed into 3 segments using a combination of the polygonal lasso tool (L (shift L to toggle settings)) and making a new layer (segment) from the selection (CMND J).
Step 1
Segmenting the front, foot.
CMND J to make a new layer from the selection.
Step 2.
Segmenting the side.
Step 3.
Segmenting the head.
Step 4.
Once all 3 segments have been made, turn off the original layer.
Step 5.
Group the 3 new segments.
Step 6.
With the group selected, hit “CMND T” and scale down the group to be the approximate scale in the room.
Step 7.
Starting with the head of the bed, adjust the perspective to make it parallel to the back wall of the room. (blue lines)
Step 8.
Next, get the side panel into perspective. For more about how to create a one-point perspective check out lesson 2.
Step 9.
Put the foot of the bed in perspective. Again make sure it is parallel to the back wall with straight horizontal lines. you can use your rulers (CMD R) to help you with this.
Step 10.
Make sure the back is wide enough and that the proportions of the different segments look right. If not, just adjust them using the transform tool until they look right.
Step 11.
Next, we need to fill the hole located between the foot and the head. Turn on the original layer and use a piece of the original bedding to fill the hole.
Step 12.
Select the section you want to use the lasso tool (L) then hit CMD J to make a new layer from the selection.
Step 13.
Manipulate the new section to match the perspective of the hole you wish to fill.
Step 14.
Place the new layer behind the rest of the bedding layers. After it’s in place, use the eraser tool to remove any excess pieces.
Step 15.
You can then start fine tuning areas that need improvement. In this example, I am using the transform tool setting “warp” to change the orientation of a pillow. Depending on how clean or close up your viewer will be to the final image and spend as much time as you think necessary with clean up using the same techniques that we used earlier.
Step 16. I do one final scale adjustment to get it looking good on the back wall.
Conclusion
Between this tutorial and lesson 10, I hope you have a good understanding of how to manipulate a 3 quarter view of a bed into both a front view and a profile view.
